EINSIEDELN: ART OF AUTUMN & 6 PORTRAYALS FROM ART HISTORY

Art of FallRecently, I visited the picturesque Swiss town of Einsiedeln. The place is one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Switzerland. Located in the heart of central Switzerland, the town is perfect for a weekend getaway in autumn.

Einsiedeln

The town is home to an impressive Benedictine Monastery which is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, featuring the «Black Madonna», an impressive black statue of the Virgin Mary. After visiting the the monastery, we took a hiking tour in the surrounding hills. The beautiful colours of the leaves in autumn inspired me to explore famous artworks in fall.

Andyˈs Tips

  1. The monastery is definitely worth a visit. Take a look at the «Black Madonna» and don’t miss «Panorama Crucifixion of Christ», a 100-metre-long giant circular painting from the 19th century.
  2. The region features some great hiking routes such as:  Einsiedeln – Amselspitz – Alpthal (Beat). More info here.
  3. Into skiing? Hoch Ybrig is a family-friendly ski region on the doorstep of Einsiedeln.
  4. Hungry? Restaurant Klostergarten can be an interesting choice: try the shrimp cocktail, Dorothee pizza and pumpkin risotto with quail breasts. For desert visit pastry shop Schefer and try Klostertorte, a monastery cake with Baileys. The shop offers a selection of more than fifteen homemade ice cream flavours, too.
